Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the reaction on the display electrode side smooth and improve the responsiveness of the device by forming the electrochromic display device by the use of the counter electrode coated with the organic metal compound containing iron.
CONSTITUTION: The counter electrode 27 coated with the film 26 composed of the organic metal compound containing iron (ferrocene, iron phthalocyanine, etc.) is used. More specifically, the insulation substrate 28 provided with the above- mentioned counter electrode 27 and the transparent insulation substrate 21 provided with display electrodes 22 having an electrochormic (EC) film 23 are opposed by way of a spacer 24, and porous opaque material 29 and electrolyte 25 are sealed in the inside to provide the EC display device. At the displaying of the above-mentioned device, the electron migration shown by formula I takes place on the display electrode side and the displaying is thus accomplished, at the same instant of which the electron migration (organic iron compound→electrode) shown by formula II takes place on the counter electrode side and the balance of the charge migration is thus taken, so that the reaction on the display electrode side progresses smoothly.
