Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for any masking material which had been considered necessary within EC elements, simplify constitution and facilitate production by improving the EC thin films formed on counter electrodes and make possible the conversion of the element type to transmission type in a symmetrical type EC element.
CONSTITUTION: An EC film 23 for display is formed on a transparent substrate 22 having transparent conductive electrodes 22. An amorphous tungsten oxide film formed by an ordinary means, e.g., EB method, is used for the EC thin film 23. A transparent conductive counter electrode 22' is formed on a transparent substrate 21' and such an EC thin film 23' in which such ions and electrons as to induce EC characteristics reversibly go in and out but no optical change occurs in the visible region is formed on said counter electrode 22'. Transparent electrolyte 25 is sandwiched between the substrates 21, 21' having been formed with a pair of the foregoing EC thin films and the periphery is sealed with sealing member 26.
