Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve display quality, responsiveness, service life, etc. by providing metal thin film electrodes respectively through roughening of the inside surfaces of both front and back plates and forming the electrodes of the front plate by so leaving window parts that the display patterns on the back plate are visible from the outside.
CONSTITUTION: After the respective inside surfaces of a front plate 14 and back plate 15 composed of hard glass are roughened, electrodes 16 by a thin film such as of Au or other are formed in the patterned form by vapor deposition method or the like on the back plate 15, and thin film electrodes 17 such as of Au or other are formed by a similar method on the inside surface of the front plate 14 excluding the regions corresponding to the portions of the display patterns of the back plate 15. Next, the lead parts on the back plate 15 are covered with an insulation layer 18 and a spacer 19 is held between both plates. An electrochromic material such as of viologen salt or other is hermetically sealed therebetween. When with the electrode 16 as negative and 17 as positive a voltage is applied, displaying of a purple color is accomplished and the background is a lusterless gold color, which improves displaying quality and is also highly effectual in responsiveness and service life.
