Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the display contrast of an element good and nevertheless to achieve longer life of the display by forming the electrochromic element by using a transition metal oxide layer having been subjected to electric discharge treatment in a nonoxidative atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A transition metal oxide layer 4 is formed on a glass substrate 2 provided with transparent electrodes 3 for display; thence, a substrate 6 provided with a counter electrode 5 is opposed to said substrate 2 and electrolyte 7 is put between both substrates which are then sealed by a sealing material 8, whereby an electrochromic element is produced. In said process for production, the layer 4 of transition metal oxide (e.g. tungsten oxide) provided on the glass substrate 2 is subjected to electric discharge treatment (plasma treatment, corona discharge treatment, etc.) in an atmosphere of a nonoxidative gas such as nitrogen gas, after which the cell is assembled in said manner.
