Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an element having superior visual recognizability and superior responding properties by using a transparent electrochromic (EC) thin film for a front electrode (opposite electrode, observation side electrode).
CONSTITUTION: A transparent EC thin film made of crystalline tungsten oxide is used. It is preferably a tungsten oxide film obtd. by vacuum deposition in about 1× 10-4W5×10-3 Torr and calcination at about 350W400°C. Back electrode (display electrode) 5' consisting of display electrode substrate 6' provided with display pattern 8' an EC thin film 9' and front electrode (opposite electrode) 1' consisting of display electrode substrate 2' provided with transparent electrode 3' and transparent EC thin film 4' are placed opposite to each other, and electrolyte 10' is injected between electrodes 5', 1', which are then sealed with sealant 11' to obtain an EC display element.
