Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the response speed of the device and achieve longer life by forming the electrochromic display device making use of substrate having an electrochromic layer formed by a diagonal vapor deposition process.
CONSTITUTION: In the electrochromic display device formed by superposing the transparent upper substrate 1 laminated with transparent electrodes 4 and an electrorodes 4 and an electrochromic layer 5 composed of tungsten oxide and a lower substrate 2 laminated with a counter electrode 6 by way of a spacer 3 and sealing an electrolyte solution 7 therein, the electrochromic layer 5 is formed by a diagonal vapor deposition process. The electrochromic layer 5 is formed by so evaporating that the angle of vapor deposition defined as the angle 11 of the vapor deposition 9 from a vapor source 8 and the normal direction 10 of the substrate 1 becomes 10 to 90°. It is desirable to apply the abovementioned diagonal vapor deposition after covering the electrode 4 by applying beforehand perpendicular vapor deposition of a certain degree.
