Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the appearance, and reduce the driving voltage, current, and power, by providing a selective reflection layer between orientation layer and transparent electrode, in a color liquid crystal display device.
CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrode 24 is formed on a lower substrate 2 of a color liquid crystal display device, and a selective reflection layer 12 to cover the substrate 2 and the electrode 24 is formed by laminating nonmetallic substances such as MgF2 and SiO2 alternately in about nine layers by vacuum vapor deposition method or similar method. On these layers, an orientation layer 23 is formed by slant vapor deposition of SiO2 or the like. Pattern electrodes 19, 20, 21, 31 are formed on an upper substrate 1, and an orientation layer 22 is formed on the substrate 1 and electrodes 19W21, 31. A background plate 13 is coated with transparent protective film or colored paint after silver plating on brass or the like of undulated surface. Liquid crystal 15 is charged and sealed with spacer 14. Thus, unlike the conventional forming of selective reflection layer 12 directly on the substrate 2, the molecule array of liquid crystal 15 is made uniform, so that the appearance may be improved.
