Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having a long life and high reliability by crystallizing a substance used as a display electrode by heat treatment under predetermined conditions, using the resulting film as an opposite electrode, and reducing the film to the half or less of the display electrode in thickness. CONSTITUTION:This element consists of transparent electrodes 1, 5, amorphous WO3 film display electrode 2, solid ion conductor 3 and counter electrode 4 consisting of crystallized WO3 film which is transparent in the visible light region and maintains electrochemical reversibility. The film for electrode 4 is obtd. by forming WO3 used as electrode 2 in <=5X10<-4>Torr degree of the vacuum and crystallizing it by heat treatment in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as Ar at 360-400 deg.C for 15-30min. By using the film thus obtd. as electrode 4 and reducing it to the half or less of electrode 2 in thickness, a coulomb balanced display element having a long life and high reliability is manufactured.
