PURPOSE:To enhance the stability of a solid ECD element, to prolong the life and to attain enhanced productivity by interposing a 3-layer structure consisting of an inner ion supplying layer and 2 ionic conductor layers between a crystalline WO3 layer and an amorphous WO3 layer and attaching electrodes to the WO3 layers. CONSTITUTION:A WO3 film 13 is vapor-deposited on a transparent electrode 12 on a glass substrate 11 and crystallized well by heating at about 350 deg.C. On the film 13 an SiO layer 14 as an ionic conductor layer, an LiI layer 15 as an ion supplying layer and an SiO layer 16 are formed in order. A WO3 layer 17 is then vapor- deposited, and finally a reflecting Al film 18 is formed as a background electrode to complete a solid electrochromic element (ECD). Since the manufacturing processes can be conducted successively in the same vacuum apparatus, the element is fit for mass production. By adding about 5-30mol% ReO3 to the crystallized WO3 film 13 beforehand, the film 13 is perfectly inhibited from being colored.
