Abstract
PURPOSE: To arrest elution of alkali contents, and enhance the quality, reliability and production yield of liquid crystal cells, by using specific glass substrate, and depositing transparent insultion film such as SiO2 on the substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Desired electrode patterns 3a, 3b are formed on upper substrate 9 and lower substrate 10 made from borosilicate base glass or the like of which coefficient of thermal expansion is 30×10-7 to 60×10-7 and content of alkalis such as Na2O and K2O is less than 10 wt.%. A transparent insulation film 8 mainly made from SiO2 is deposited on the substrates 9,10, while the film 8 is not spread on an external connection electrode 32. At the time of this film coating or secondary film baking, the adhesion performance of the film 8 is increased to perfection due to temperature elevation to about 600°C. Next, the substrates 9, 10 are sealed by a sealing member 5, and liquid crystal substance 4 is sealed. Voltage 7 is applied between the electrodes 3a, 3b, and together with the action of the polarizing plates, on both sides of the cell, the electric information is converted into the optical information.
