Abstract

PURPOSE: To accelerate the response speed of image display and erasing, obtain a long service life, and lower the driving voltage, by uing a counter electrode composed by reversible oxidative substance and carbon, in an electrochromic display device using water-based electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: A display electrode 2' and a voltage applying terminal 2 thereof are provided on a transparent substrate 1 by means of a transparent conductive film. An inactive metal thin film which becomes a counter electrode voltage applying terminal 3' is provided on a back substrate 3, and is contacted with an counter electrode 4 which is formed by pressurizing a reversible oxidative substance such as tetrachlorohydroquinone and a carbon, at point A. Substrates 1, 3 hold a porous pre-scattering plate 6 and a separator 7 from both sides, and are opposedly disposed across a spacer 5. By an epoxy resin 8, and electrolyte 9 composed of 4,4'-dipyridinium compound and supporting electrolyte being dissolved in water is sealed.
