Abstract

PURPOSE: To differ the tone of segment parts and the tone of other parts and improve the contrast of display by forming the liquid crystal display device by the use of the specific polarizing films of dichromatic ratios varying with wavelengths.
CONSTITUTION: In the field effect type liquid crystal display device formed by sealing nematic liquid crystal 14 between two sheets of glass substrates 12, 18, provided respectively with transparent electrodes 13, 17 and disposing polarizing films 11, 19 on both sides thereof, the polarizing films whose dichromatic ratios increase with an increase in wavelength in the wavelength region longer than the maximum absorption wavelength thereof. Such polarizing films are obtained by dyeing the high polymer films composed of polyvinyl alcohol with the dyes shown by formulasI, II, etc. then thermally uniaxially orienting the same. It is desirable that the dichromatic ratios of the abovementioned polarizing films increase in the wavelength region longer by more than 25nm than the maximum absorption wavelength. In addition, their use in combination with iodine polarizing films enables additional improvement in the contrast to be achieved.
