Abstract

A liquid crystal (LC) display device comprises an LC cell (1) in front of a fluorescent plate (2). The LC cell comprises carrier plates (3, 4) one (4) having parts (9) of its inner face outside the display zones (8) projecting towards plate (3) which is provided with spacers (11), abutting the projecting parts (9) to reduce the LC thickness in the non-display areas; the LC material (12) contains a pleochroic dye, has positive dielectric anisotropy, is homotropically orientated at its boundary surfaces, and in the displayed non-operated zones has a cholesteric orientation whose helix pitch is such that the liquid crystal layer is continuously homotropic in the thinner light-transmissive areas and in the operated background zones. The fluorescent plate (17) receives excitation light through the cell and the device provides coloured images on a contrasting or dark background (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
