Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to reduce the thickness of the device even when the whole device is brightened and to reduce power consumption and heat generation by using a fine blind-like sheet formed by laminating two kinds of transparent layers having respectively different refractive indexes in parallel with each other as a reflecting plate.
CONSTITUTION: A planar reflector 2 is arranged under the fine blind-like sheet 1 laminating two kinds of transparent layers n1, n2 having respectively different refractive indexes in parallel with each other, a cold cathod-ray tube 3 to be a light source is arranged on a side position deviated from a position just under the sheet 1 and liquid crystal 4 is arranged just over the sheet 1. In the device, light from the light source is uniformly diffused without being attenuated and the whole liquid crystal 4 is uniformly irradiated with light, so that light irradiation can be satisfied only by one light source. Consequently the thickness of a liquid crystal display element can be reduced, energy can be saved when using the liquid crystal and equal characteristics capable of reducing a difference between bright and dark states on a display device and obtaining clear screen can be improved.
