Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain devices such as a watch having vivid luminescence and colors and a high inversion effect with a simple constitution, by combining the first polarizing plate of a neutral color, two liquid crystal layers, and the second and the third color polarizing plates which have polarization axes orthogonal to each other and are different from each other. CONSTITUTION:Colorless, blue and red polarizing plates are used as the first, the second, and the third polarizing plates; and if the polarization axis of the second polarizing plate is orthogonal to that of other polarizing plates, the transmitted light of the first polarizing plate 1 has the ground part rotated at 90 by the second layer of liquid crystal cell 2, and the lighted pattern part is not rotated and reaches the second polarizing plate 3. Though the ground part passes through the second polarizing plate because the polarization direction of the ground part agrees with the polarization axis direction of the second polarizing plate, only blue color permeates it because the lit pattern part is orthogonal to the polarization axis direction of the second polarizing plate. In the third polarizing plate 4, the last transmitted light of the ground part orthogonal to the polrization axis is colored with red. The blue light of the light pattern part transmits polarizing plate 4 because it is parallel with the polarization axis, and it is reflected by reflective plate 5, and thus, a blue pattern is displayed on the red ground.
