Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable good black and white display and color display which is different in local parts by applying a prescribed voltage to the parts, corresponding to respective picture elements, of a 1st liquid crystal layer having a twist structure and applying the prescribed voltage also to the 2nd liquid crystal layer laminated on the 1st liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device is constituted of substrates 1-4, electrode layers 5, 6, the liquid crystal layers 7, 8 and a polarizing plate 10. The two liquid crystal layers which are different only in the twist angles and are equal in twist angle, double refractions and the thickness of the liquid crystal layers are so laminated that the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules on one side aligns to the minor axis of the other. The exit light in which the double refractions received by the light propagating perpendicularly to the liquid crystal layers are offset is the linearly polarized light having substantially no wavelength dependency on the azimuth angle. The black state is attained when the absorption axis of the polarizing plate 10 on the exit side is aligned to the axis of polarization of the axit light. The white state is attained when said plate is disposed at a 90 deg. angle. The locally colored display is executed when a proper voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer 8.
