Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the coloring of the titled element by setting the axis of polarization of a polarizer on the incidence or projection side of light is a direction corresponding to the degree of rotary polarization when the primary colors are transmitted through a liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:Orienting films 3 and 3' are formed on one-surface sides of incidence-side and projection-side substrates 1 and 1' and the liquid crystal layer 2 is formed of, for example, TN type liquid crystal between the films 3 and 3'. Further, polarizers 4-6 and analyzers 4'-6' corresponding to R, G and B on the incidence side and projection side are laminated on the other- side surfaces of the substrates 1 and 1'. For example, the polarizers 4-6 are formed having their axes of polarization in the same direction and the analyzers 4'-6' are formed having their axes of polarization in directions corresponding to respective degrees of rotary polarization. Further, films containing dichroic dyes which color in cyan, yellow, and magenta respectively are used preferably for the analyzers 4'-6'.
