Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the wavelength dependency of the quantity of transmitted light of the titled element by controlling the orientation state of liquid crystal molecules so that the planes of polarization of R, G and B light beams at the time projection are all in the same direction. CONSTITUTION:Oriented films 3 and 3' are formed on incidence-side and projection-side substrates 1 and 1' across transparent electrodes 6 respectively and a liquid crystal layer 2 is charged between the films 3 and 3'. Then the films 3 and 3' consists of orienting film components 3R, 3G and 3B, and 3R', 3G' and 3B' corresponding to three picture elements 5R, 5G, and 5B constituting a picture element P. Further, the components 3R-3B, for example, are put in the same orientation direction and the components 3R'-3B' are put in different directions. Consequently, the liquid crystal molecules of the elements 5R-5B are controlled to said rubbing direction to put the planes of polarization at the time of projection in the same direction, which is further equalized to the direction of the axis of polarization of an analyzer 4'.
