Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal display device of which the number of cells is small and which is able to make multicolor displaying by combining a cell mixed with two colors out of three primary colors of subtractive color mixing and a cell of the remaining one color by using guest-host type liquid crystal cells. CONSTITUTION:In a display device 1 formed by superposing liquid crystal cells 2a, 2b of the 1st color and the 2nd color and further disposing a polarizing plate 2c to form a display part 2 and combining the same with display parts 3, 4 of the constitution similar to the above, guest-host liquid crystals of a red color for the cell 2a, etc. of said 1st color and of a bluish green color (yellow color + blue color, complementary color of a red color in three primary colors of a subtractive color process) for the cell 2b, etc. of the 2nd color are used. If in said display device the voltage application to each cell is done on both cells, the transmitted light of a light source 6 is observed. If it is done on the 1st color cell alone, the transmitted light of the bluish green color is observed and if it is done on the 2nd color cell alone, the transmitted light of the red color is observed. If no voltage application is done on both cells, the transmitted light of the black color is observed.
