PURPOSE:To obtain a transmission type liquid crystal display element wherein display patterns are visible similarly from any direction by disposing a transmission and diffusion plate on the observer's side of a transmission type TN liquid crystal display element wherein polarizing plates are provided respectively on both surfaces of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION:In figure, 6 is a part desired to appear black during liquid crystal displaying and 7 is likewise desired to appear bright. The light emitted from a light source 2 is shut off of transmitted light by a liquid crystal display element 1 selectively according to the display patterns thereof, and its shadow is projected on a transmission and diffusion plate 5. Since the observer observes the shadow (brightness and darkness of light) projected once on the plane of the plate 5, the visual angle characteristics are eliminated in the display thereof, and the display of the same quality is obtained in spite of observation from A, B or other directions.
