PURPOSE:To realize a perfect dichromic display, by setting a color polarizing plate at the outside of at least one of the two sheets of transparent electrode substrate into which the twisted nematic liquid containing a trace of coloring matter is enclosed. CONSTITUTION:The twisted nematic liquid crystal 3 containing a trace of dichromic matter is enclosed between two sheets of glass substrate 1 and 2 having a transparent electrode and an orientation processing layer on the inner surface, respectively. Then a neutral polarizing plate 4 and a color polarizing plate 5 are attached on the outer surface of the substrate 1 and 2 each so that the axes of polarization 4a and 5a of plates 4 and 5 are substantially coincident with or orthogonal to the orientation directions 1a and 2a of the liquid crystal molecules on the surfaces of the substrate 1 and 2. In the unimpressed state of voltage, the hue decided by the coloring matter is displayed. While in the impressed state voltage, the hue which is decided by the synthesis of the absorbed wavelength of light of the coloring matter added to the crystal 3 and the transmitted wavelength of light of the polarizing plate 5 is displayed.
