Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the display device of good visual angle characteristics and high performance with low current consumption by letting the liquid crystal assume the specific orientation on the upper and lower substrate surfaces and specifying the ratio of the thickness of the liquid crystal layer and the intrinsic pitch of the liquid crystal.

CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrode patterns 3-1, ...3-7 and electrode 3' are provided to substrates 1, 2 and transparent lead wires 3-a, ...3-g are connected to the patterns 3-1, ...3-7. Orientation layers 4, 5 are formed through diagonal vapor deposition layers 4, 5 are formed through diagonal vapor deposition, etc. of SiO₂. Liquid crystal molecules 7 have the bearing parallel to B-B' on the surface of the upper substrate 1 and have the angles of 3 to 40° to the surface of the substrate 1. On the surface of the lower substrate 2, they have the bearing parallel to A-A' and have the angles of 3 to 40° to the surface of the substrate 2, so that the liquid crystal molecules 7 are twisted 270° counterclockwise in the molecule long-axis direction between both substrates 1, 2. The ratio between the thickness of the layer 8 and the intrinsic pitch of the cholesteric structure of the liquid crystal is made nearly 0.25 to 0.5. The layer 8 is formed by the one comprising mixing about 2% of cholesteril nonanoate to the mixture of nematic liquid crystal.
