Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high grade display by crossing the orienting directions of 2 glass substrates each having an oriented polyimide film at <=90 deg. and using a liq. crystal layer of only a nematic liq. crystal or the liq. crystal contg. a small amount of an optically active material or the like reverse to the liq. crystal in optical rotatory power. CONSTITUTION:In a twisted nematic field effect mode liq. crystal display element, 2 glass substrates are coated with polyimide polymer films, and the films are rubbed to form orienting films making the tilt angle of a liq. crystal about 10 deg.. The orienting directions of the films are crossed at 80 deg.. The liq. crystal layer is formed with only a nematic liq. crystal or the liq. crystal and about 0.25wt% optically active material or cholesteric liq. crystal reverse to the nematic liq. crystal molecules in optical rotatory power. Thus, the occurrence of a phenomenon causing the coexistence of levo-rotatory and dextro-rotatory liq. crystal molecule regions in one display element and the formation of an induced domain are prevented, and a high grade display is obtd.
