Abstract

PURPOSE: To make plural sets of display information easy to see in different colors of background and enhance decorativeness by dividing the liquid sealing part between a pair of electrode substrates to plural parts and putting the P-type- and N- type nematic liquid crystals containing multichromatic dyes into the respectively different sealing parts.

CONSTITUTION: Display electrodes 5, 6 are formed by way of insulation layers 3, 4 respectively to electrode substrates 1, 2. Orentation treatment films 7, 9 are formed by covering the electrode forming surfaces of the substrates 1, 2. The circumferential edges of the electrode substrates 1, 2 are sealed by frame-form sealing materials 9 and the liquid-crystal sealing parts are divided to the right and left by a partition material 10. The films 7, 8 on the left side are coated with surface active agents 11 such as lecithin to be made to the perpendicularly oriented films 7a, 8a which cause homeotropic orientation of the N-type nematic liquid crystals 12a. Those on the right side are made to the horizontal orientation films 7b, 8b which cause homogeneous orientation of the P-type nematic liquid crystals 12b. Dichromatic dyes 13a are put in the left side and dichromatic dyes 13b in the right side. By differing the right and left background colors in this way, the identification of the respective displays is made easy.
