Abstract

PURPOSE: To achieve the higher appearance of color display by providing multiple layers of transparent electrodes with an insulation layer as an intervening layer on one or both of two sheets of transparent plates which oppose by way of a liquid crystal layer in the guest-host effect type display device.

CONSTITUTION: The display device is constituted by transparent electrodes 1, 2, 2' and 3, insulation layer 4, liquid crystal layer 5 and transparent plates 6 and 6'. Here, the transparent electrodes 2 and 2' are connected by the portions not illustrated. The portions where the transparent electrode 2 or 2' exists are let A and A' and the portions where neither 2 nor 2' exist are let B. The signal shown by (a) of the figure is applied to the transparent electrode 3 and the (b) of the signal whose phase is deviated 180° from the signal (a) is applied to the transparent electrode 2. The voltage to be applied between the transparent electrodes 2 and 2' and transparent electrode 3 is given by the difference V of the voltages of (a) and (b). Hence, if V is larger than the minimum voltage at which the liquid crystal causes phase transfer, the portions of the A, A' of the liquid crystal layer 5 are of nematic phase and appear colorless and transparent. Hence, if the signal of (a) or (b) is applied to the electrode 1, the colored displaying may be made.
