Abstract
PURPOSE: A white liquid crystal display having improved dynamic and static characteristics, manufactured by enclosing a liquid crystal composition comprising a specific ester having a cyclohexane and a benzene rings between the opposite two electrode base plates.
CONSTITUTION: The polyimide films 3 are formed on each of the two Pyrex glass electrode base plates 2 with the transparent In2O3-SnO2 electrodes 1 of a given shape, and oriented by rubbing with cottom cloth. The polyester sheet 4 as a spacer is placed between the electrodes so as to cross rubbing directions at an angle of 86W 94 degrees and hot-pressed to give a cell. The liquid crystal composition 5 comprising one or more types of ester compounds having a cyclohexane and a benzene rings of the formula (X and Y are 1W6C straight chain alkyl alkoxy, or cyano groups) is enclosed in the cell, and the polarizing plates 6 are laminated to make the rubbing direction of the base plates 2 coincident with the polarization direction. Thus, a twisted nematic cell is obtained.
