PURPOSE:To obtain a display region capable of displaying positive and negative images in one layer, by sealing in a nematic liquid crystal made by adding a dichromatic dye and an optically rotating agent between substrates for vertical orientation processing and rendering the distance between orientation processing surfaces partially different. CONSTITUTION:A vertical orientation film 6 is provided between the insides of a substrate including display electrodes 4a, 5a corresponding to a positive region, and display electrodes 4b, 5b corresponding to a negative region, and the film is made thicker in the positive region, and thinner in the negative region. When drive voltage are not applied to all the couples of the electrodes, the display face of the positive region becomes colorless in the whole face, but the display face of the negative region develops color in the whole face. The nematic liquid crystal used is made maximum in positive dielectric anisotropy by about 100Hz and maximum in negative dielectric anisotropy by about 20kHz, and the former frequency is used in the positive region, and the latter frequency in the negative region. Since a partition sealing material is not needed between the positive and negative regions, both can be approached.
