PURPOSE:To attain a uniform display which has high-speed displaying responce and does not have shade unevenness by providing an orientation-controlled film contg. a TiO2 and a vertically oriented film. CONSTITUTION:In a positive type guest-host type liquid crystal which consists of a nematic liquid crystal 6 having negative dielectric anisotropy and dichromatic dye 5, insulating substrates 1 are immersed into soln., in which mixture of org. metallic compd. contg. org. titanium compd. such as tetraoctyleneglycol titanate, etc., for example, mixture of org. titanium compd. and org. zirconium compd. such as tetraacetylacetonate zirconium etc. are disolved into org. solvent, and the substrates are calcined to form a orientation-controlled film 3. Further, after the substrates are immersed into the soln. of org. silicone compd. such as octadecyl triethoxysilane and the like or are spin-coated with avove soln. and the insulated films are formed, the formed film is lapped, and thereby, a vertically oriented treated film is obtained.
