Abstract

PURPOSE: To extend the application range of a liq. crystal display device by separating at least one of a pair of substrates into parts where a liq. crystal is oriented homogeneously and homeotropically.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrodes 2, 2' are formed on substrates 1, 1', coated with a resist or the like, and subjected to homogeneously orienting treatment using cloth or the like with fluororesin powder stuck. After peeling off the resist, electrodes 2, 2' are subjected to homeotropically orienting treatment by dipping in an aqueous soln. of a vertically orienting agent (silance coupling agent). A guest- host liq. crystal consisting of P type liq. crystal 3 and dichromatic dye 4 is then sealed in the space between substrates 1, 1'. When a voltage is applied to electrodes 2, 2', the liq. crystal layer of part 6 sandwiched between electrodes 2, 2' is made colorless, and by forming the voltage-applied part into a segmental shape, colored figures, etc. are displayed in other part with no voltage applied.
