Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a sufficient coloring display with addition of a small amt. of dischromatic dye through low voltage driving by setting the pitch of the liquid crystal and the thickness of the liquid crystal layer of a liquid crystal display element of which one of electrode substrates faced to each other is subjected to vertical orientation treatment and the other to horizontal orientation treatment, within a specified range. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 11A and an electrode 12A thereon are subjected to horizontal orientation treatment. Another substrate 11B and an electrode 12B thereon are subjected to vertical orientation treatment by using dodecyl trimethyl ethoxysilane or the like. The ratio a/P between the pitch P of the liquid crystal and the thickness (a) of the liquid crystal is set at 1.5-2.5 in such a way that about 2wt% cholesteric liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy contg. a dichromatic dye is contained between the substrates 11A and 11B, and so that the liquid crystal layer shows a colored state 13 when applied with no voltage and shows a decolored state 14 as its liquid crystal molecules and dye molecules orient vertically when applied with voltage. Thereby, the display element of good contrast and good turn-off time characteristics is obtained.
