Abstract

PURPOSE:To make gradation display easy by using the nematic liquid crystal composition added with dichromatic dyes, making the molecular orientation of liquid crystal horizontal and vertical mixed orientations and using the semiconductor substrate formed with liquid crystal driving elements in matrix form to one substrate. CONSTITUTION:Liquid crystal driving transistors and capacitors are formed in matrix form to the region 2 of a semiconductor substrate 1. A common electrode 5 is provided to an upper glass substrate 4 and liquid crystal 7 is put between the both substrates 1, 4 which are then sealed 6. The liquid crystal composition comprising adding dichromatic dyes to positive or negative dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal is used for the liquid crystal 7 and a guest-host system is employed. Further, in the case of, e.g., positive dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal molecules 26, horizontal orientation is applied through rubbing or the like to the upper substrate 24 and vertical orientation by silane coupling agent or the like to the lower substrate 25. When an electric field is applied to the electrodes 27, 27, the horizontal orientation remains near the upper substrate surface 24 but the rest are vertically oriented. In this way, the electric field-applied portions become dark and the non- applied portions pale, wereby the distinct displaying is accomplished.
