PURPOSE:To obtain a display panel having high image quality, a high responding speed and a long life by providing a vertically orienting property to one of substrates and a parallelly orienting property to the other and specifying the gap between the substrates in a cholesteric-nematic transition system. CONSTITUTION:In the transition system display panel holding a nematic liq. crystal contg. one or more kinds of liq. crystals assuming cholesteric phase, vertically orienting film 3 is formed on one electrode substrate 1, and horizontally orienting film 4 on the other electrode substrate 2. The gap between the substrates is adjusted to more than twice as long as <=5mum spiral pitch of liq. crystal 7. By continuously applying a voltage over a long time, a light scattering region extends around the electrodes and does not disappear even after eliminating the voltage. This exudation phenomenon is prevented by this method. In addition, the responding speed is increased, and the life is elongated. The characteristics of a host-guest type display panel formed by adding a dichromatic dye to liq. crystal 7 are enhanced similarly.
