CONSTITUTION:Since horizontally orienting films 5, 6 made of polyimide resin or the like have been rubbed, a chiral nematic liq. crystal is in planar arrangement. The specific pitch of the liq. crystal is 1/2-1/12 of the gap between electrode substrates. In a state with no voltage the liq. crystal is in planar arrangement, so light oscillating in any direction is absorbed by any of a dichromatic dye 8, and the whole region of the display surface is in a chromatic state. When a voltage 10 is applied, the planar arrangement is converted into focal conic arrangement, light is diffusely reflected and is almost independent of the absorbing effect of the dye, and the display surface becomes a cloudy state. When a voltage 11 is applied, homeotropic arrangement is provided, and light is hardly absorbed in the dye and passes through the liq. crystal layer. Thus, a dichromatic display having white and the color of the light source is enabled.
