Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a negative liq. crystal display device of phase transition type with a variety of colors and fine decorative properties by adding a dye to a liq. crystal and applying a voltage to a display pattern part alone to carry out a display at a transparent state with a background of a light scattering state. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 5 are provided on each glass substrate 4. Each spiral 6 shown that a mixed liq. crystal is at a cholesteric state having the spiral axis in the direction of the line in spiral. Thick rods 7 are a dichromatic dye, thin rods 8 show a nematic state of the liq. crystal, and a light scattering state due to a thermooptical effect is shown by 9. In addition, 10 shows a light scattering state of a focal conic state formed by applying a low voltage, and 11 shown a homeotropic state formed by applying a high voltage. The light scattering states of 9, 10 are similar to each other in appearance including coloring degree due to the dye to form an erasing state.
