Abstract

725,695. Quartz-metal seals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1953 [Feb. 23, 1952], No. 4986/53. Class 36. A quartz-metal seal comprising a quartz tube having one end pressed around and hermetically united to a foil portion of a metal conductor is made with an apparatus comprising a pair of jaws 14, 15 having opposing operative faces across each of which extends a wide groove 17 and lands 18, 19 which are so spaced that the groove overlies the foil section of the conductor and the lands overlie the ends of said section. Two molybdenum conductors 1, 2, having foil sections 3, 4, are supported in a jig 5 between the jaws 14, 15. A quartz tube 12 is placed around the wires and held with its lower end approximately ¢ mm. above the surface of the jig to allow for the circulation of an inert gas therethrough during sealing. The lower end of the tube is softened by heat and flattened by the jaws. The jaws are retracted and the tube end reheated after which the jaws are advanced until the pressed quartz stops further movement. The lands 18, 19 restrict the flow of quartz in the longitudinal direction of the assembly. Lateral flow is prevented by a flange 22 on each jaw which, when the jaws are closed, overlies a corresponding cut away portion 23 on the opposing jaw. The top surface 20 of each jaw is preferably concave and the upper land 19 correspondingly curved so that a pair of arcuate grooves 21 (Fig. 2) are impressed on the quartz, leaving no cavities at the sealed end of tube 12. The lower lands 18 are straight and close the outer end of tube 12, pressing the quartz about the lead-in wires. Specification 713,828, [Group XL (a)], is referred to.
