Abstract

658,598. Pipe-end closing. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1949, No. 20307. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1948. [Class 83 (iv)] In severing and sealing a tube, the tube is first flattened adjacent the severing point by pressure applied thereto, then severed, and the tube end is then sealed before removal of the applied pressure. Tube 12, Figs. 1-3, is flattened by two pairs of superposed, relatively movable jaws 10, 11 and 13, 14, the upper pair 10, 11 having a fixed jaw 10 and the lower pair 13, 14 including a knife 16 which is movably mounted on jaw 14 to enter a recess 15 in jaw 13. After severing, the jaws 13, 14 and knife 16 are retracted and the tube end is sealed by producing a welding arc between the two severed portions of the tube. In a modification the jaw 14, Figs. 4 and 5, is omitted so that the resulting sealed tube is left with an unflattened end bead 18, Fig. 6.
