Abstract

601,400. Electric welding. CHICAGO METAL HOSE CORPORATION. Aug. 30, 1945, No. 22387. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] Thin metal parts are edge welded in sequence a number of times along a predetermined margin by welding electrodes applied thereto, sufficient heat and pressure being applied by the welding tools during the final welding operation to reduce the weld margins to a thickness substantially no greater than that of the parent stock. The method is particularly applicable to work having a thickness of .01 inch or less. Two sheets 10, 11, Fig. 3, are superimposed and resistance welded by roller or like electrodes at a pre-determined distance from the edges of the sheets. The sheets are then gripped respectively by jaws 20, 21 and drawn apart so that their main body portions are substantially co-planar and the welded edges 16, 17 extend upwards at right angles. Cutters 30, 31 spaced from the sheets by an amount 33 of the order of <SP>1</SP>/ 64 ", sever the sheets along the body of the weld 15 forming new sheet edges, and the joint is then passed between roller electrodes 13, 14, Fig. 7, and further welded ; the pressure of the rollers causing the weld to be compressed into the plane of the sheets as shown at 40. The weld then has dimensions substantially the same as the thickness of the sheets. In a modification applicable to making tubes and the like a preformed sheet 50, Fig. 12, is of tube form with adjoining edges 51, 52 which are welded by roller electrodes and the weld severed by cutters along the line C-C. The joint is again passed between roller electrodes 64, 65, Fig. 18, arranged outside and inside the tube respectively and this last welding operation compresses the seam to a thickness substantially the gauge of the tube wall as shown at 68. A plug may be drawn through the tube to size the tubing and insure its circularity and finally the welded tube may be subjected to further working to comprise a flexible tubing, Fig. 20.
