1,141,216. Welding by fusion. TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT STROITELNYKH KONSTRUKTSY IMENI V. A. KUCHERENKO. 30 June, 1967, No. 30300/67. Heading B3R. A member 2, e.g. a sheet or section, is arc welded to an end of a bar 1, by enclosing the end of the bar 1 in a split mould 3 projecting beyond the end of the bar 1 locating the member 2 on the mould 3 and using consumable electrodes 7 to pierce the member 2 and to fill the resulting cavity 5. The mould 3 grips the end of the bar 1 and is a cooled copper mould shaped to provide a reinforcing bead 6 around the end of the bar 1. A cooled ring 4 clamps the member 2 to the top of the mould 3 and is connected to a cooled guide 9 for a group of electrodes 7.
