Abstract

944,451. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Nov. 7, 1962 [Nov. 15, 1961], No. 40870/61. Heading B3R. Apparatus for butt-welding tubes 10, 12 prepared with a welding groove comprises a ring 28 mounted on the tubes and removable laterally therefrom, the ring carrying an electrode 47 and locating means 34 engaging the welding groove to locate the electrode 47 as relative rotation of the tubes 10, 12 and the ring 28 occurs during welding. The locating means 34 comprises spring-loaded rollers in an annular recess 33 into which projects a removable welding torch 38. The ring 28 and a sprocket 40 are formed in two hanged halves so as to be laterally removable. A split hinged clamp 16 is fixed on one tube 10 by means of three centring screws and carries a sprocket 18 on a driving shaft 20 journalled in a spring- loaded pivoted block 22. After the ring 28 is located by the rollers 34, the clamp 16 is fixed adjacent the ring 28 and the sprockets 18, 40 are joined by a chain. The torch 38 has a watercooled block 50 carrying the electrode 47 and provided with grooves for the passage of argon which during welding pressurizes the recess 33 and so improves the weld. In a modification the tubes are rotated.
