1299754 Welding by fusion S PAULANGE 6 Feb 1970 5754/70 Heading B3R A rotary tool holding device for machining (e.g. milling), inspecting or welding (e.g., as shown, circumferential butt welding), particularly in respect of a selected tube in a bundle of U-tubes, comprises a gapped ring 1 adapted to be clamped on to a tube, a rotatable gapped, tool support ring 18 mounted in a channel 17 of the ring 1, and a drive means to uniformly rotate the ring 18 continuously through 360 degrees despite the gap therein. When the gaps in the ring are aligned, the device may be laterally assembled on to the tube. The ring 1 comprises a radially screw-adjustable tube-engaging V-block 4 on which is pivoted a clamp arm 7 carrying a tube-engaging screw 8 operated by a handle 9. The ring 18 is rotated by a pin a pair of worms 14 which mesh teeth 19 on the periphery of said ring, are bevel geared together at 15 for co-rotation, and are motor driven via a flexible shaft 16. The driving worms are suitably spaced to ensure continuous drive. As shown, the ring 18 supports an electrode holder block 20 connected to a current cable and shielding gas (argon), cooling water and filler wire conduits, a filler wire spool 24 fitted with a wire tensioning brake, a filler wire feed device comprising friction rollers 28 driven by a motor and speed-reducer 27, and three flanged pillars 30 which, together with the body of the motor and speed-reducer (or a fourth pillar should filler wire be dispensed with), constitute a winder for a sheath (32, Fig. 3, not shown) enclosing the above cable and conduits. Electrode/workpiece distance is maintained by a serrated roller 23 engaging the workpiece, the block 20 being radially slidable and spring biased to this end.
