Abstract

1,103,710. Machine tool details. COLLINS MACHINERY CORPORATION. 25 Aug., 1966 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 38119/66. Headings B3B, B3C and B3N. Apparatus for gripping and rotating an elongated workpiece, e.g. a length of pipe 23 to be screw-threaded, comprises a set of jaws 37 mounted around a central axis 21 and arranged to pivot on spindles 26, each jaw having a workgripping face 42 which is convex towards the axis 21 and shaped so that the workpiece can be gripped and driven in either direction and so that each jaw 37 can adopt a work-release position in which the jaw lies generally perpendicular to a radial plane through the central axis and pivot axis. The spindles 26 are carried by a rotatable carrier 18 mounted in a housing 10 but are connected by a pair of linked levers (30, 32), Figs. 4, 5 and 8, not shown) to a drivering 31 driven by a reversible motor 35 through pinion 36. Rotation of the drive-ring causes, in the first place, pivoting of the jaws 37 to grip the workpiece and then rotation of the carrier 18 together with the jaws 37 and workpiece 23. To ensure that pivotal movement of the jaws to the gripping position precedes rotation the carrier 18 is braked by a spring-tensioned brake-band 53 and brake-shoe 50. The apparatus may be supported, Fig. 1, on a portable stand 13, while the housing 10 supports two parallel slide-bars 54 which carry pipe-threading means 56 of the type described in Specification 1,038,310 and a tapered pipe end reamer 60 which may be manually pressed against the pipe end by means of a pusher 62.
