Abstract

947,757. Welding by fusion. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 9, 1962 [April 13, 1961], No. 13567/62. Heading B3R. In a machine for operating on, e.g. welding, a peripheral zone within a tubular workpiece, a composite body A insertable within the workpiece 3, comprises three concentric tubular members 10, 5 and 16, the inner member 16 being rotatably mounted within the non- rotatable intermediate member 5 and carrying a tool B which is radially adjustable, and the outer member 10 being rotatable to operate centring means 13 for centring the body A in the workpiece 3. The tool B is an arc-welding torch pivotally mounted on the inner member 16 and movable radially by a link 26 actuated by a rod 29 from the exterior of the tube 3. The rod 29 also carries a stop 32 for locating the machine endwise. The inner tube 16 rotatably carries a centring head 18 having pins 20 extendable by gears 21 actuated by a fluidpressure piston 22 to engage the interior of a tube 1 to be welded to the tube 3. The intermediate member 5 is fixed to a plate 6 having sleeves 7 axially engaging over pins 8 secured to the work. Rotation of the outer member 10 by a hand wheel 15 moves pegs 13 along a groove having a sloping base in the intermediate member 5 so forcing the pegs 13 against the tube 1 and centring the body A. The inner member 16 and torch B are rotated by a motor 35. Gas, e.g. argon, water and welding wire 43 are fed through the inner member 16 to the torch B. A lamp 41 illuminates the portion being welded which is viewed by an optical system 33. Specification 946,256 is referred to.
