Abstract

1,142,198. Welding by fusion. CLARKE, CHAPMAN & CO. Ltd. 8 Nov., 1966 [9 Aug., 1965], No. 34082/65. Heading B3R. In apparatus for welding tubes end-to-end in which a welding gun 26 and a feeding device 34 for feeding welding wire through the gun are mounted to move round the tubes on a clamp 2 fixable to one of the tubes, the welding wire is fed axially into a curved section of the gun 26 which terminates in a nozzle 30 directed radially inward. Connected to the clamp 2 is a split support ring 10 having a hinge 12 and a looking device and rotatably carrying a drive ring 16 meshing with a worm 22. An inert gas shielded consumable or non-consumable electrode welding gun 26 is axially slidable in a sleeve on a bracket 28 adjustable radially on the drive ring 16. An annular gear 52 on the support ring 10 engages gearing actuating a cam 62 to reciprocate the gun 26 axially as the gun is moved round the tubes. By including a gear having missing teeth in the gearing, the gun 26 is caused to dwell at certain parts of its reciprocation. The gun comprises a feed motor 44 driving feed rolls pushing wire from a reel 40 through the gun 26. In apparatus for multi-pass welding, the gun is automatically moved radially at the end of each pass. In a modification, the support ring 10 is connected to two clamps 2, one for each of the tubes being welded.
