490,628. Sealing electric conductors into glass. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1937, No. 22967. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1936. [Class 36] [Also in Group XI] A stem for an electric lamp or similar device comprises a glass stem tube 10, Fig. 3, into which is sealed a leading-in wire or wires 12, 13 having a flattened portion 14 embedded by fusing and pinching the lower end of the stem tube, the fused portion of the latter being flattened so as to have its flattened surfaces at right-angles to the flattened part of the wire and substantially parallel to the tube. The transverse cross-section of the stem press is approximately I-shaped, with the flattened parts of the leading-in wires situated in the outer portions thereof. In forming the stem, the exhausting-tube 11 is mounted concentrically with the stem tube 10, with the leading- in wires 13, 14 extending longitudinally within the space between them, and heat is applied to the lower end of the stem tube to bring that portionandthe adjacent part of the exhausting- tube into a plastic condition. The mass is then pressed together by matrices 15, 16 of the form shown in Fig. 6, which are fastened to clamping-jaws 17, 18 adapted to be pivoted on a fixed block and operated simultaneously by a pair of links. In a modification the pinching is effected by a pair of pivoted jaws which press upon opposite sides of the softened stem tube while a pair of co-operating matrices mounted upon sliding carriers are moved laterally in opposite directions to confine the lateral spread of the glass.
