960,962. Stems for electric lamps; fluorescent discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Oct. 17, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39339/62. Headings H1D and H1F. In an electric lamp having a stem sealed into an opening in the envelope, the stem including a press through which at least two lead-in wires are sealed and an exhaust tube sealed to form a blow hole at the bottom of the press, a groove in the press extends from the blow hole to the top of the press. The exhaust tube may form a blow hole on each side of the press, a groove being then provided from each blow hole. In the form shown, the stem comprises a flame 2 sealed into the end of the envelope 14, a cylindrical part 3 flattened at the top to form the press 4 and lead-in wires 6 sealed through the press. The exhaust tube 10 extends axially into the stem and terminates in blow-holes 11, 12 from each of which a groove 16, 17 extends towards the top of the press. The grooves may be formed by pressing a pair of jaws having raised portions into contact with the hot press. The grooves may extend to the top of the press or may terminate in lips 19, 20. The filament may be secured to the lead-in wires by bending the ends of these back on themselves.
