Abstract

299,780. Westinghouse Lamp Co., (Assignees of Gustin, D. S.). Oct. 31, 1927, [Convention date]. Caps are secured to bulbs by retaining - members consisting of split rings having inner peripheries of triangular or like form adapted to engage with a reduced part of the neck of the bulb of corresponding cross sectional shape. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4, three depressions 17 are formed in the neck of the bulb and the retaining-member comprises a split or sectioned metal ring 21 having a triangular inner periphery 23 which may be strengthened by folding back tongues 24. The shell 20 of the cap holds the member 21 in engagement with the depressions 17 and may be soldered to it, either independently of or together with a leading-in wire 30; the wire may project outside the cap, as at 32, or inside the member 21. The member 21 may also be formed of fibre, a phenol condensation product, &c., and a strip of asbestos &c. may be interposed between it and the neck of the bulb. The depressions 17 may be formed either before or after the sealing-in operation by jaws 42, 43, Fig. 8, the jaw 42 being shaped at 44 to form two of the depressions while the straight jaw 43 forms the third. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following :-In a modification shown in Fig. 7 (cancelled), the cap is retained by a wire which is laid in the depressions 17 and its ends twisted and soldered together at 38. The leading-in wire 30 also may be secured at 38. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
