Abstract

635,444. Glass-metal seals. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. April 14, 1948, No. 10339. Convention date, April 25, 1947. [Class 36] Two metal parts are sealed together and insulated from each other by means of a glass flux, the metallic parts consisting of concentric sleeves, the outer one f of which has a crimped edge h for the reception of the glass flux i in which the edge of the inner sleeve e is fused. The outer sleeve f preferably has a coefficient of expansion higher than that of the glass i, thus compressing the glass on cooling. The inner part of the groove h is short and can expand freely, thus reducing the tensile stresses on cooling. The seal may be used in a mercury vapour converter, the outer sleeve f being welded to the converter casing a at g and the inner sleeve e being welded to the cathode floor plate c at d.
