Abstract

Metallic-vapour apparatus. - A seal for the anode or other part of a mercury-vapour rectifier consists of a channel containing fusible metal into which dips a flange on the part to be sealed and a packing-ring of asbestos &c. for protecting the metal from the mercury vapour, the metal hold. ing the parts so tightly as to compress the packing-ring sufficiently without the use of bolts &c. The Figure shows an anode 5 secured by two devices of this type. The end 1 of an arm proceding from the cathode chamber carries a flange 2 and an annular channel 3. A member 17, fitting in the arm 1 and abutting on the flange 2 carries a flange 19 entering the channel 3 and held there by fusible metal. An asbestos or like packing-ring 20 is gripped in channels in the members 1 and 17. To the member 17 a member 6 is connected by an insulating joint 21 which may be formed from vitric material as described in Specification 215,475. Into the member 6 is screwed a conductor 4 carrying the anode 5. and grooves 7, 8 containing fusible metal are formed in the ends of the conductor and the member 6. Into these grooves dip two flanges 12, 14 of a ring 11. which also has an intermediate flange 13 pressing on a packing-ring 8 in a groove at the joint of the members 4. 6. Openings 23 are provided in the ring 11 through which the air escapes when the ring is pressed into position and which are afterwards sealed with solder. A condensing chamber 16 at the junction of the members 4, 6 further shields the metal in the grooves 7, 8 from mercury vapour.
