Abstract

325,907. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Whitaker, F. P. Dec.'10, 1928. Joint - making packing.- Leaking mercury from a seal consisting of mercury 7 and asbestos 6 between the porcelain insulator 5 and the anode stem 1 of a mercury arc rectifier, is collected in a cup-like member 9, the rim of which is drawn into engagement with a shoulder 8<1> on the insulator by means of an abutment 13<1> on the anode stem and clamping screws 13, acting on the face of the insulator; packing 15 such as a flexible metal gasket or an annular pressing is inserted between the anode 3 and the insulator in order that mercury vapour from the cup 9 may pass slowly into the rectifier. A cooling medium such as water may be contained in the anode stem. A screw 14 may be provided for draining. A clamping-ring 12 with packing 11 may be inserted between the screws 13 and the insulator.
