Abstract

365,957. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, ET CIE, Baden, Switzerland. June 8, 1931, No. 16692. Convention date, June 6, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] Condensation of the mercury vapour is facilitated by arranging a cooling surface away from the arc path and connecting it to a potential which is negative with respect to the cathode. A rectifier is provided with a cooling jacket a and a cooling coil c which is negatively biased by means of a battery d. The potential may be applied through a switch g which is operated automatically in dependence on the load, the voltage, the vapour pressure, or the temperature of the cooling medium or of the rectifier. The magnitude of the potential may be controlled automatically in dependence on one of the above values.
